Navigating Blogs

I'm wondering if at some point we'll get the chance to discuss how to navigate the world of blogging. I would like to know if there are ways to evaluate the credibility of a blog or to gauge readership/audience/popularity. It's hard to wade through all of this information and not necessarily know where it comes from or who is behind it.

Search Tool

I promised yesterday to send around the html-code for a search tool as you can find it on some blogsites (in the sidebar). I cannot just copy it into this post since it is html-code, but I've put up an image that shows the code, to see it better, click on the image.

If you are interested in installing it, you have to go into Layout/Page Elements and click on Add a Gadget. You have to choose from the list that pops up then. Choose Html-Code/Java Script. See my screen shot above.

Changing the Order of a Post

When we use our blog site not just for blogging (with the newest entry always on top) but as some kind of a micro-site, we have to be aware that posts show up in a reversed order. I was asked whether it is possible to change the order of the post? The answer is, yes. But to do so you have to use a trick. You have to go into the Post Options (at the end of the post box) and change the post date/time. This is the only way to do it.

Teaching each other

Claudia may be right! The growth of social media technology brought about that peer learning and learning by doing gained particular importance. I am referring to the question that she poses at the end of her post http://cacostasaad.blogspot.com/2008/09/expectations.html.

Particularly interesting in this context might be a quote from the article Teacher Educator, vol. 39, no. 3, Winter 2004 where authors Jayne R. Beilke and Matthew J. Stuve point out that "inner-city youth often reject traditional forms of literacy canonized by schools" (158). I believe I am able to confirm this observation with my own experience when I showed my 12 year old step-daughter how to work with "blogger". She was very interested in using social media, but the fact that a parental figure would set it up for her made my particular media choice less interesting for her. She would rather pursue platforms chosen by her friends and class mates.
